What is Social Work?

Social workers are: 

  • Allied health professionals, qualified through a four-year degree.
  • Represented by the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW), which supports and empowers the profession.
  • Accredited social workers hold AASW-approved qualifications or equivalent recognised international credentials.
  • They demonstrate ongoing professional development and ethical practice.


Roles of social workers:

  • Partner with individuals, families, groups, and communities to address personal challenges and structural barriers.
  • Work in diverse settings, including people-facing roles (like counselling) or non-people-facing roles (such as policy development or consultancy).

What is an AASW Accredited Disability Social Worker?

The AASW Accredited Disability Social Worker credential recognises social workers with specialised skills and expertise in the disability sector.
